I don't remember ANH showing Luke showing much issue with shooting stormtroopers, he just does it like it's no big deal. Yeah, just a crazy Force vision when she touched Luke's lightsaber and Maz flat out telling her, clearly Rey jumped to conclusions! Finn flat out spelled out his motivation in TFA's final act yet so many people are like, "durr, why is he abandoning the Rebels at the start of TLJ?!" I remember another person claiming Rey had no reason to know she was Force-sensitive when she resisted Kylo's mind-reading.
This is why I have so many issues with people's criticisms of TFA/TLJ because it's blatantly obvious many of them saw these movies a grand total of once and can't remember all of it.
And then of course people who don't fucking pay attention didn't understand why he was running at the start of TLJ even though he flat out tells Han on Starkiller that he's only on the mission for Rey, it's only at the end of TLJ does he show himself becoming a full member of the Resistance. He does show fear of facing the FO at their full strength which is why he plans to run away halfway through the film, only coming back because Rey was captured. And why would he feel guilty about attacking his FO soldiers? Again, he just saw them execute a village of defenseless people who were guilty of jack and shit, he also isn't a dumbass and knows there's no point in grieving over those who will now kill him on the spot for being a deserter, and he also witnesses the FO use Starkiller to wipe out millions, possibly billions, of lives so yeah, don't think he has much of a reason to feel bad about killing FO soldiers. He sees innocent people get executed, said, "fuck this", and split.
Why would Finn have PTSD already, the start of the movie is his first mission ever. Oh yeah, what a big, loving family they are, I'd certainly get worked up killing any of these fine folks. Also, who said the other FO members were his friends, every single FO character we see shows no sign of friendship, Kylo and Hux hate each other, Phasma betrays the FO to save her own life, Snoke verbally tears Kylo apart for failing him, etc. I really didn't like how Rogue One ended with Jyn and all her team walking away without a single scratch and living happily ever after, so tame and safe, blech.įinn didn't kill anyone in the village, he raised his gun and then lowered it without firing a shot. Oh yeah, Disney really made to keep everything nice and family-friendly. Kylo Ren literally executes an entire village at the start. Fucking millions, possibly billions lost, but ANH thinks it's more important to leave the big scene of someone feeling sad for Luke grieving over the old dude he knew for a day (because fuck his aunt and uncle, I guess). he is the first person we saw in the first footage, yet somehow, his story is negligible.Īnd Leia is cracking wise mere scenes after her torture and seeing her entire planet get nuked. Finn is a main character in the ST, 1/3rd of the good guy cast. this isn't the PT which was 4 or 5 movies in and had earned the right to shake things up. this isn't a simple contradiction, it's an inability to properly define 1/3rd of your main cast. his "character" of having a deep past is just an avatar, a costume. Finn is good humored and all around super normal, cracking jokes and stuff all the time. these new guys are all about waiting til you are 23 to start combat. there is a reason Kylo smashes a helmet and slashes at a wall instead. ANH had Vader torturing Leia at the start, physically lifting a guy via gripping his neck. no need to show PTSD or the effects of brainwashing. ST's idea of space nazi is very clean and shiny and obvious comic book humor, guys falling on their faces, etc. his "history" it has no visible effect on his attitude, he is just a Disney style confident hero type like everyone. this isn't a contradiction, this is psychotic. suddenly, an hour or so later, he is totally cool with killing people he grew up with, in two separate fun scenes of murder alongside Poe as well as Rey. Finn is happily killing his very own (previous) friends within minutes of arriving back home, following his "panic attack" over his "first time" killing people at age 23. the intro scene with the bloody helmet might as well be a trailer shot.
it is a neat way to kick off his story and that's as far as JJ wants to take it. outside of people using it as a joke, and the paper thin Phasma plot, it is never addressed after his intro. this isn't a contradiction, it's the plot of the rise and fall of the GFFA.įinn's lack of any consequence from his upbringing means his background is entirely hollow. Jedi were in power for a thousand generations, then systematically wiped out. setting the scenario, the current age the work is in.
